Nationwide Anti-Polio Drive Begins Across Pakistan Today

Pakistan will launch its first nationwide anti-polio campaign of the year today, Monday, to vaccinate over 45 million children. The campaign will run from February 2 to 8 and aims to protect children under five from polio. Authorities hope the effort will strengthen the country’s ongoing fight against the disease.
The country recorded a significant decline in polio cases last year. In 2024, Pakistan reported 74 polio cases, while in 2025, the number fell to 31. Officials said this progress reflects better program implementation, enhanced surveillance, and improved coordination between federal and provincial stakeholders.
Prime Minister’s Focal Person for Polio Eradication, Ayesha Raza Farooq, said around 400,000 trained polio workers will conduct door-to-door vaccinations. The campaign will use anti-polio drops to ensure every eligible child receives protection. Officials emphasized the importance of community cooperation to achieve nationwide coverage.

Authorities, however, noted that security challenges remain a major obstacle. Polio workers and their security escorts have faced repeated militant attacks, especially in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan provinces. These attacks make it difficult to reach every child and complete vaccination drives effectively.
Despite these challenges, Pakistani health authorities remain committed to eradicating polio. The nationwide campaign reflects ongoing dedication to public health and child safety. Officials hope that continued efforts and community support will help eliminate polio from Pakistan.
